Maui Upcountry Memories

By travelanswerman | January 25, 2011

During frequent visits to Maui these past 30+ years, I ALWAYS love making the journey Upcountry.  I was once again thrilled during a recent stay to experience all that is beckoning visitors to the slopes of Haleakala.

For the incredible views alone, no one visiting Maui should miss the drive across to Ulupalakua Ranch– the last few miles present a beautiful vista overlooking the Wailea resort area, with Molokini and  Kaho’olawe in the background – and the distant north shore waves at the far end of the isthmus connecting the west and east mountains on your return drive – everywhere you look is stunning!

Ulupalakua has a fun country store and they are ready to grill you favorite sandwich which you can eat on picnic tables.  http://www.ulupalakuaranch.com/store.htm

Across the street is the Tedeshi Winery which has a wonderful history display – and don’t miss The Kings Cottage tasting room and a chance to purchase some of its tasty offerings, as well as to sample the peace of mind that Hawaii’s last king, David Kalakaua sought by visiting this destination.

Just a short drive further up the slope is the must-visit gardens of AKL Maui (Alii Kula Lavender).  Be sure to take advantage of the walking tour of Alii Chang’s vision of finding a plant that could thrive in this climate – the gardens have blossomed from a single lavender plant to 45 varieties covering 10 acres.  Not only did I enjoy wandering the paths through this beautiful garden and photographing the lovely blooms – the gift shop provides varied offerings of bath and body, aromatherapy, culinary and also pet friendly products – visit them on line at http://aliikulalavender.com/t-faq.aspx

Sitting at 3200’ elevation on the slopes of Haleakala, The Kula Lodge & Restaurant is located in the midst of yet more beautiful gardens with magnificent views of the Pacific and the west Maui mountains.  Sample the pizza prepared in the terrace wood burning oven – delicious!  Sit at the beautiful bar and enjoy your favorite drink, then stroll through the art gallery and gift shop.

Should you want to spend a bit more time exploring these stunning slopes, book yourself a stay in one of the five rustic chalets located on the property and enjoy this magnificent vista for more than just a short visit.

Upcountry Maui certainly gives new meaning to the term “Maui Wowee!”
