By travelanswerman | December 25, 2009
Have you ever savored on duck noodles, beef or meat noodles? Ever had boiledminced pork wrapped in yellow dough? Well, its Bangkok, the capital city ofThailand that brings one of the largest collections of street food stalls starting from ‘curry on rice’ stalls to unique noodles stalls. For the tourists, the food stalls of Bangkok might be a bit intimidating but it goes quite cheap and delicious for the locals. Most of these food stalls can be seen in the busy thoroughfares and local markets of Bangkok.
Any sane human being would get confused with the wide array of food stalls along the streets of Bangkok. You can also take a peep through the glass display of thefood stalls to find out the ingredients as well as the way in which they are prepared. Various kinds of noodle stalls are available ranging from chicken noodles, duck noodles, egg noodles withwonton and ‘moo daeng’ and so on. Truly speaking, the list is endless and the noodles come in different sizes and shapes. Kick off with Sen Yai, the rice river noodle which is actually a wide flat noodle made from white rice flour. Next, you can go forSen Lek, a medium flat rice flour noodle. The Bah Mii, Gieow and Woon Sen are not to be missed.
After you have selected your favorite noodle, decide whether you are going to have it with soup or in a dry form. Your next step will be to choose what meat you will prefer in your noodles. Get an idea from the display set inside the stalls. However, the prices vary from 20 to 50 baht and you can always go for extras by just adding five more baht. Prices are subject to change. Well, if you have the noodles ready, just start off or else if you wish add some more condiments like dried ground chili or fish sauce orvinegar with chili. This would certainly come out as the best treat of your life.
Thais love to have rice and they usually take it with various kinds of side dishes. The curry-on-rice stalls in Bangkok are considered one of the cheapest and quickest places to eat. The ordering process here is less complicated than that of ordering noodles because here you just have to point towards the exact option you like and you’ll get it. One of the best places to have your lunch are the ‘made-to-order’ food stalls. The best part here lies in the fact that whatever you wish they will cook it for you. They don’t provide a menu but they serve the same kind of food - ‘kaao pad’, ‘pad kaprao’, ‘kai jiaow’ and ‘moo kratium prik thai’ are some of the most popular dishes out here.
There are stalls where you will be served Thailand’s popular multi-legged snacks and that too in nice silver trays. Get someroasted bugs with sprinkles of chili, salt or pepper. The fried grasshoppers are probably the best amongst them. Justremove the head and the wings before you eat it. Apart from this there are also a variety of unusual street menus like thebamboo caterpillars, ants and ant eggs, water roaches and little frogs. Don’t get surprised if you come across alive and kicking small shrimps which are put in a bowl and then strangled with delicious ingredients like roasted rice, ground chili, fish sauce etc. In fact, Bangkok will surely make you feel the sensation of small creatures.
