Top Five Food Blogs for Delicious Traveling
By travelanswerman | November 3, 2009
While in a foreign land who can resist the lure of a spicy aroma wafting from a restaurant? The beauty of exotic fruits ripening in the sun on the roadside? Or, if you live dangerously, the excitement of indiscriminate meat-products roasting for hours on end next to an open fire? Coupled with the well known fact that sightseeing burns around a bazillion calories an hour, it’s pretty much an undisputed fact that sampling the local cuisine is a huge treat when traveling to a new place. If you really want to get a taste of local flavor (literally!), check out these five awesome food blogs written by people who are lucky enough to eat in some amazing cities every day.
1. Chew: This adorably quaint blog reviews restaurants and wine festivals in and around Budapest. It has detailed descriptions and pictures of up-and-coming places to eat in the city, along with really interesting information on the budding wine industry in Hungary. In addition, they provide pages with top restaurants to try in Budapest and instructions on Hungarian cooking if you become really inspired.
2. Instanbul Eats: Mouthwatering descriptions of tons of different street foods as well as the best places to picnic can all be found on this Istanbul food blog. The content is incredibly thorough (it gives the exact address of its number one rated sujuk sandwich stand) and essential cultural context is provided to fully understand the Turkish take on the foods the blog covers.
3. David Lebovitz: Lebovitz chronicles his charmed life in Paris with a culinary twist on this blog. A 12 year Chez Panisse pastry chef veteran, Lebovitz knows a thing or two about food. Yet his blog manages to be totally unpretentious and has a great mix of restaurant reviews, anecdotes from his travels in the French country side, and delicious-sounding recipes. Lebovitz also provides a my paris section with his top restaurant recommendations and tips on maximizing your Parisian dining experience.
4. Austin Bush Photography Thailand Food Blog: Written from the perspective of a photographer living in Bangkok, this food blog has some of the most vivid and beautiful food photographs we have ever seen. Bush not only photographs delicious
looking street food and outdoor markets, but also does an amazing job capturing the varied types of people that cook and shop at them. We especially like how he offers detailed Google maps next to his posts so travelers have a better chance to navigate to the places he writes about.
5. California Taco Trucks: California’s cuisine may be associated with Alice Waters, snobby organic food, and In’n’Out but the true undiscovered culinary gem has to be its plethora of delectable taco trucks. These mobile restaurants have the freedom to set up in the parking lot or street corner of their choosing, and dish up cheap eats from their incredibly efficient in-truck kitchens late into the night. This blog allows you to search by city in California, so no matter if you’re in Los Angeles or the San Francisco Bay Area, you’ll always know where to go for a late night snack.
