Tipping…or No Tipping?

By travelanswerman | January 8, 2009

Some countries that are averse to tipping have arrived at their attitudes in different ways. In China, the custom conflicts with communist ideology: in Australia, it stands against notions of self-sufficiency. In Japan, gift-giving and service are matters of honor and formality. Which doesn’t mean that you can never show your appreciation to the helpful tour guide, waiter, doorman, or taxi driver. It just means you have to do it in very specific ways.

Before your next international trip, familiarize yourself with the local custom regarding tipping in response to service. You and the individual providing the service will both be glad you did.
